Completing the forms

This section of the Charity Filing Guide looks at the process of completing three of the forms included in the T3010-1 Information Return: T3010-1, T1235(09), and T1236(10). It also introduces interactive versions of these forms that you can use as a working copy, or as a reference to find out more information about the lines on each form.

Points to keep in mind

  • The three forms discussed in this area of the site—T3010-1, T1235(09), and T1236(10) - are not the only documents you need to submit to CRA. See Submitting the Forms for more information.
  • Guide T4033-1 Completing the Registered Charity Information Return is available online. If you don't have Internet access, call CRA for a printed copy 1-800-267-2384. CRA does not include the Guide in the T3010-1 Information Return package.
  • CRA posts information in public sections of the forms in the Charities Listings on the CRA website. Check the listing for your charity occasionally to be sure CRA entered your information correctly.

Workflows for completing the forms

You can complete Form T3010-1, T1235(09), or T1236(10) on paper or electronically. Use the method you prefer. Whether you use the paper-based workflow or the electronic workflow, you still need to mail the completed forms to CRA. At this time, you cannot submit the T3010-1 Information Return online.

Paper workflow overview

Use the paper forms CRA mails to you or print the PDF forms available on the CRA website.

Steps in the process:

  • Enter your financial information on a working copy of the paper form
  • Review the information; make sure it’s accurate and complete
  • Make corrections if needed
  • Transfer the information to a good paper copy
  • Make a photocopy
  • Attach notes to the file copy to help you remember which financial information you put where and why
  • Send the original to CRA; file the copy

  • Type in your financial information
  • Print the form

Using the interactive forms

The interactive forms in this section provide detailed information about the lines on three forms:

  • Form T3010-1 Registered Charity Information Return
  • T1235(09) Directors/Trustees and Like Officials Worksheet
  • T1236(10) Qualified Donees Worksheet/Amounts Provided to Other Organizations

Each form is interactive:

  • Click the more information button to display or hide plain language explanations of each question.
  • Enter your financial information; the form calculates totals and highlights linked lines.

The forms are designed to meet three goals

  1. To help you understand the questions so that you can answer them more effectively.
  2. To let you practice with an electronic working copy of the form.
  3. To help you build confidence by using the forms and learning more about the requirements.
